I remember watching “Firestarter,” the second episode of FLCL, back in middle school (I wasn’t allowed to watch Adult Swim back then so I sneaked into my parents room to watch while they were gone on a trip) and I just remember being in awe at what I saw.
I had watched anime before but I didn’t understand that anime could look or be written in the way FLCL was. Up until that point I thought anime could only ever be like DBZ, Bleach, Naruto, CardCaptors, and Sailor Moon. It changed my outlook on anime and it remains my favorite anime to this day.
Best Quotes From FLCL
Naota: When you’re in a town like this all covered with smoke, you forget that there’s a world outside. Nothing amazing happens here. And you get used to that, used to a world where everything is ordinary. Every day we spend here is like a whole lifetime of dying slowly. But now Haruko is here. That’s how I know there really is a world outside.
Haruko: Hey, I didn’t know boys felt like this inside.
Naota: Ah. Don’t touch me there from behind.
Haruko: What are you waiting for? Hurry up and pop it.
Naota: If I rush, it won’t pop. Go slow.
Mamimi: You like Haru-san.
Naota: How can I like someone who’s insane?
Haruko: It takes an idiot to do cool things. That’s why it’s cool.
Naota: What did you do to me?
Haruko: CPR. What do you think I did?
Naota: That’s not what I meant.
Mamimi: Did she put her tongue inside?
Haruko: Please don’t tell people our bakery’s motorbike ran you over.
Naota: My brother, I mean – how much do you like him?
Mamimi: It’s hard.
Naota: You saw the sign at our bakery, that bread’s old.
Mamimi: …Watermelon.
Naota: Huh?
Mamimi: Or like a panda with a mean face, or like sandals with pressure points drawn on them, or the smell of a blackboard eraser, or a Sunday morning where you wake up and it’s raining. Well, I like him more than hard bread.
Mamimi: If that thing hits, do you think we’ll have school tomorrow?
Haruko Haruhara: Ukuleles suck! Pu!
Masashi: “Pu”?
Naota Nandaba: Those… eyebrows.
Amarao: What about the eyebrows?
Naota Nandaba: Nothing.
Amarao: She’s just as bad as Medical Mechanica! You’re not going to get what you want from her! FIGHT BACK, TAKE HER OUT!
Haruko: I lost him again because of you, Ta-kun, we couldn’t pull it off. You wanna come along?
Haruko: ‘Know what? Forget it. ‘Cause you’re still a kid, Ta-kun. Save it for next time.
Naota: Don’t call my brother! I’m the one whose here! Hey, look at me! I’m the one whose gonna save you! Canti!
Naota: Now listen, my name is Naota. Don’t EVER call me Ta-kun again!
Eri Ninamori: Why is that thing eating? What is it anyway?
Kamon Nandaba: That’s just our TV.
Eri Ninamori: Why is it walking?
Kamon Nandaba: Well, uh, it must be a TV-Walkman.
Eri Ninamori: By Sony?
Haruko Haruhara: Stop the native girl!
Mamimi Samejima: Ta-kun!
Eri Ninamori: …People might say things if they know.
Naota Nandaba: …yeah, people would say all kinds of things. Just don’t hang out with me for next couple of days.’
Eri Ninamori: But tonight its okay, right?
Eri Ninamori: What’s really weird… is your ears…
Naota: What? You’ve seen them…?
Eri Ninamori: I was told not to touch them, perfect for a cat…
Eri Ninamori: They’re fake.
Amarao: Where are my eyebrows? I’ve gotta find my eyebrows!
Naota Nandaba quotes
FLCL was one of the few shows I’ve enjoyed where it feels right to think, “I have absolutely no clue what I just watched, but it was awesome”
“Nothing amazing happens here. Everything is ordinary. The huge factory that can be seen from our town, the Medical Mechanica Plant, all the adults got excited when it came here, like it was really a big thing. The white steam that blows out every day at the same time, it looked to me like smoke that signified some kind of omen. Smoke that spreads out and covers everything.” – Naota Nandaba
“I can hardly tell anymore where the truth ends and the lies begin.” – Naota Nandaba
“Don’t call my brother! I’m the one whose here! Hey, look at me! I’m the one whose gonna save you! Canti!” – Naota Nandaba
“When you’re on a bike, the ocean’s a lot closer than you think. The autumn salt wind went right through to the back of my nose. And maybe it’s because, like Haruko said, my head was empty.” – Naota Nandaba
“I love you.” – Naota Nandaba
“By the time I realized it, I had already swung the bat. My palms still sting. I wonder if Haruko feels like this all the time.” – Naota Nandaba

Eri Ninamori Quotes
The show is confusing, wild, and deep. But it’s also about puberty. Puberty is confusing, wild, and deep. Even if the whole thing flies over your head you can still enjoy the show. And even if you don’t grow into the super adult you thought you would, you can still be a cool one. Like Haruko says in the very first episode of the new season “BORN TO BE MILD!!!”
“They’re fake.” – Eri Ninamori
“You’re Puss in Boots, the one who tricks the prince. He hides who he really is and pretends to be someone else forever. So in time he becomes that person, so his lie becomes the truth, see? “Just don’t tell anybody I stayed the night here. People might start saying things if they know.” – Eri Ninamori
